As the Tory leadership contenders begin a weekend of public debates, philanthropist, business leader, Phones 4U founder and previous party donor John Caudwell tells Talk TV’s Adam Boulton that, while he’s taking a close interest, he is so far uninspired.
The lack of business experience amongst the remaining candidates is a big worry for Caudwell, who labels the lavish tax-cutting promises of several as pure ‘electioneering’.
While the UK should ultimately lower taxes to attract inward investment, Caudwell concedes, that needs to be part of an extensive, ten-year investment programme along the lines of Caudwell Pandemic Recovery.
“But this is the problem with politics,” said John.
“The politicians now can only take a two-year view. And in fact, in the Tory leadership contest, they’re only taking a two or three-week view.”
Such short-termism is holding the country back.
