After Boris Johnson faced another explosive Prime Minister’s Questions, which included the defection of one Conservative MP to the Labour Party and the call from former Cabinet minister and fellow Brexiteer David Davis to ‘in the name of God, go’, previous Conservative Party donor John Caudwell was interviewed by Kirsty Wark on BBC Newsnight.
Caudwell said he was awaiting the results of civil servant Sue Gray’s report on the various partygate allegations before giving his final judgment on Boris Johnson’s fate.
“Depending on how damning, if it is damning, Sue Gray’s report is, there comes a point at which, out of dignity and pride, he ought to resign,” John said, before adding “I really hope Boris can be vindicated” given that “he’s done a lot of good things over the past two years.”
When asked who he might back if and when Boris Johnson is replaced as party leader, John said: “I think possibly Jeremy Hunt might be the best guy. But we would lose the charisma Boris has got and that election-winning style of his.”
Caudwell was part of a panel including Conservative MP Jake Berry and Labour MP Sarah Jones.
